Sound Observations

Observation 1: 10:30am Home
My first observation I was in the middle of doing a lot of things at once which allowed for levels of sound to flood my apartment. The loudest by far was the dryer running clothes in the other room, occasionally it would make a loud bump or thud as the clothes spun around. The next noticeable sound was the sharp ticking of my wristwatch at my desk which I hardly ever notice unless I concentrate on it. As I concentrated on the watch the next sound that came to my ears was my laptop whirring at various volumes and intensities. Finally to break my concentration was the comparably loud slam of the door as my roommate walked into the apartment breaking my concentration and ending the observation.
Observation 2: Coffee Shop Noon
For my second observation I decided to try a venue with a lot of sounds going on at once. The loudest sound that overwhelmed the entire space was the sound of a coffee machine brewing coffee as it went in and out. I then listened to the sounds of people talking to one another or odering coffee which while it was impossible to pick out one conversation over another it seemed to have a certain musicality to it much like the films we viewed earlier. In addition to the conversations there was a waterfall in the middle of the coffee shop which adds a sense of relaxation to the fast paced environment of this venue. I still had my wristwatch and laptop with me while I was observing but unlike before their sounds seemed to be drowned out by all the other sounds flooding the environment.
