Cucalorus

Cucalorus was a lot cooler than I ever thought it would be. I spent a majority of my time there backstage as a screen coordinator. This was how I ended up meeting sever different filmmakers and got to talk with them about their work.

The hardest part about the entire weekend was finding Matt Malloy. He was a reoccurring emcee for the festival and he was famous for disappearing and reappearing. But what made this frustrating is that I could never find him when I needed him but if I was at the bar after a screening I would run into him.

I started out with Mapplethorpe, a narrative film about the life and death of photographer Robert Mapplethorpe. It was very stylistic with many montages that lead up to the actual photographs taken by Mapplethorpe.

Next I watched probably one of the best films all weekend, Lords of Chaos. The film had that perfect mix of horror, drama and comedy to make a highly satisfying film. I watched this film with several classmates which was nice compared to the usual watching a film by myself.

Then I watched Abigail Falls, a love story that makes absolutely no sense. However when the film started it stated that it was shot entirely on Iphone.  While it was shot on iphone the picture quality was excellent and made me question why I don't shot more since even I have an Iphone.

Finally I watched a shorts block that had predominately African American cinema. These pieces were some of the most gripping short films I had ever watched and often had a motif of using silence to reinforce the film.

Getting to meet with filmmakers and sitting in on Q&A's allowed me to understand what to expect from audiences and meeting people who are very interested in film. I did not get to network as much as I liked to but almost everyone I did introduce myself too seemed to remember me throughout the festival.

I did not take photos of every event however I did take some memorable photos.

Pictured is Austin, Trevor and myself at Lords of Chaos. The final picture is a skeleton that turned out to be the emcee but while his identity was a mystery we all took pot shots on who he was and what we thought he was going to do.
